There are only two types of system memory we are going to cover here DDR and Rambus , There are others 72pin-Simms and SDram but they are to old to use , So we will stick to DDR and Rambus.

DDR is used more then any other type of memory because it is cheap and fast, It can be used with AMD or Intel and even Viacyrix motherboards , It comes in three speeds PC2100 at 266MHz and PC2700 at 333MHz and even the new PC3200 at 400MHz , And it comes in five sizes 64MB , 128MB , 256MB , 512MB and 1Gb. The best thing about DDR is that it can be used as a sigle stick , For example if you are going to run a ( cpu ) or processer P4-2.4GHz at 533MHz-fsb and would like 512MB of memory , You can buy one stick of PC2700-333MHz 512MB , You don,t need two sticks of 256MB , I have 1GB of PC3200 in main. The only time you would use DDR in pairs is if you are going to use P4-cpu at 800MHz-fsb , Then you will need two sticks of DDR PC3200 at 400MHz at 256MB to get 512MB, put one stick in channel-A slot-0 and the other in channel-B slot-2 this is call dual channeling and it is the best way to run P4 at 800MHz .

Rambus is not cheap but fast and is a Intel only memory type , I say that because there is no AMD or Viacyrix motherboards that uses Rambus memory out there that I know of. And un like DDR you must use it in pairs , And if you have four memory slots 0 through 4 and only going to use two of them 0 and 1, Then you will need to put the blanks that come with your motherboard in 3 and 4 , Rambus comes in to speeds of 800MHz for 400MHz-fsb P4-cpus and 1066MHz for 533MHz-fsb P4-cpus, And comes in four sizes 64MB , 128MB , 256MB and 512MB .
